EDUCATION
Introduction and Teambuilding Courses
These are usually day courses, but are also very valuable
in the residential context. They are relevant to all age groups,
including staff.
Schools and Colleges traditionally target specific groups for these
courses
- New intake groups (Year 6, VIth Form entrants and new College intake groups)
- High academic achievers
- Subject and Departmental groups
- Teaching and Lecturing groups, particularly for newly established teams
and departments
We usually combine a series of tasks, some with a physical challenge and
some without. In all cases, successful teams will plan, complete and
review their tasks as they progress through the day, maintaining their
strong points and developing the weaker areas, all in the setting of an
enjoyable day in a superb country area.
Tasks with a physical challenge are set in such a way that there are
always roles for those who do not wish to take in the physical element.
Successful teams will realise and allocate the roles necessary to
succeed.
NVQ Level 2 training in Outdoor Leadership
4th Dimension provides comprehensive training in this area, which includes:
- Land based activities
- Off ground roped activities
- Water based activities in kayak, canoe and katakanu
- 16 hour Rescue and Emergency Care first aid award
- Health and Safety within the Outdoor Industry
- Planning and facilitating day and residential courses
- “Hands on” practical experience in instructing real groups on a daily basis
The course lasts for 6 months, is based in West Sussex and is essentially practical with School, College and adult groups. Therefore candidates gain vast experience in the skills necessary to instruct and teach a wide range of activities. Caravan accommodation is available throughout and food is provided during 90% of the course.
2009 candidates working as follows:
Levi
supervising our 2010 interview candidates on an activity.

Noel and Sophia on our “Learn to Lead” climbing course in the Peak District.

Amanda takes a group through the rules of a problem solving task.
As a small family business with a “quality not quantity” ethos, we know that the 8 candidates we appoint will gain far more insight into and experience of the outdoors than they would if they were part of a large group at a big multi-centre organisation on the same course.
Day release courses
Educational establishments are constantly searching for
courses to supplement the more traditional courses they offer. In 2008 we
were approached by Oakwood School, Surrey, with a view to running a course
for Year 10 students which would lead to an ASDAN award.
This proved so successful that the candidates will certainly achieve bronze
and silver standard and may also achieve gold. Senior management at Oakwood
were amazed at the quantity and quality of the work produced by the
students. The course continues in 2010.
GCSE and Duke of Edinburgh Awards
4th Dimension personnel have great experience in both of these areas. Our Managing Director was the first person to introduce GCSE PE to Brighton & Hove schools and sat on the South-East Examination board. Another member of our staff has worked extensively with leaders of the D of E groups within Surrey County Council.
